The battery life on my Canon R50 has always been a bit hit and miss. Most of the problem is caused by “off” not really being off. If I’ve used the wi-fi function and don’t disable it then even when off the camera remains in wi-fi mode. It’s apparently because I might want to connect my phone to the camera to download photos. I can assure Canon that will not be the case.

This past weekend I turned on the camera and immediately ran out of battery. I grumbled under my breath but wasn’t too concerned. I knew I had used that battery before Sunday so swapped the original Canon battery out for the Jupio after-market and went my merry way. Wi-fi wasn’t on. Bluetooth for GPS from the phone was. Since I had the tripod out I was looking at the back screen rather than the viewfinder. And, between positions I turned the camera “off”.

23 photos was all that I got before the battery died. The rating is 300+. Something was wrong.

I experimented by charging both batteries to 100%. I took 600 shots of the TV with the Jupio and then left the camera on with the display running. 20 minutes later the battery was dead.

I’m assuming that because the screen is on, the sensor is on and that is pretty much equivalent to taking photos. Instead of clicking away I left the camera on. The Canon original battery went 2.5+ hours before running out of battery. It did shut off every 30 minutes but immediately restarted

As I tested the Canon battery by leaving the screen on I charged the Jupio, in a Jupio dual-charger. I’m quite sure 1% per second is a little too fast a rate to be real. After reseating the Jupio it charged at a slower rate but still significantly faster than the 80-minutes expected to 100%. Then, to test, I reseated it again. WTF! 33%. Gets to 100% again. Reseat. Back at 30%.

Today I purchased a second Canon original LP-E17 battery. The Jupio has been cosigned to my ewaste bin. And, my new habit is to remove the battery when not in use.
