I’ve just subscribed to The Listening Leader after reading a post by Matt Mower on the filters we use in conversation.
Have you ever watched a movie where the protagonists have something to say to each other but can’t get it out because they instantly jump to assumptions?
—then you know what filters can do.
Do you have an evening news magazine service on TV where the articles have no depth and cover one side at best?
—then you will see what filters can do.
Have you ever been angry at someone only to find out later you were in the wrong because you jumped to conclusions?
—then you have been hurt by filters.
Dialogue as a communication strategy works to eliminate these filters through the practices of suspending judgement and identifying and suspending assumptions. First you have have to begin Listening to yourself. Then you will be able to listen to others.
