In preparation for next weekend’s Eurovision Song Contest - Basel 2025 I watched the shorts of all 37 songs. It’s going to be a hard year to pick a winner with nothing standing out for me. Performance on the night will be everything. Countries are moving further towards songs in their national language which for an English speaker like me hides any lyrical gems.
🇦🇺 Australia: Good fun song that will be a crowd favourite but won’t win. I’m Australian and this is one of our better entries.
🇮🇸 Iceland: The only song that grabbed my attention from the start
🇮🇱 Israel: Sounded like a contender but will have genocidal politics against it, and rightly so.
🇸🇮 Slovenia: The only other song that sounded to me like it had something.
🇸🇪 Sweden: Probably has the best crowd sing-a-long chorus, yet banned in our house because it isn’t Mads.
Interestingly, several countries sounded like they had incorporated musical influences of others into their songs.
