A while ago Terry Frazier wrote a piece explaining how he was using a Fujitsu scanner to change his note-taking strategy.

This thing [the scanner] is so fast and so painless to use I’ve changed my note-taking strategy. I used to attempt to enter everything into some sort of computer - PC, laptop, PDA. But there were many times when that was either impractical or improper. Now I don’t worry about it. I carry a notepad everywhere I go. I write stuff. I draw stuff. I scribble. When I get back to the office I tear out the pages, drop them in the scanner, punch a button and have all my notes in a nice PDF file.

I thought, “What works for Terry may just work for me as well”, and last week I purchased a [Brother MFC-5480CN](http://www.brother.com.au/Products/ MFC_productoverview.asp?ProductID=174&SubCategoryID=1) multi-function centre. It has a sheet-feed scanner built in and just like Terry I’m now able to scan my notes directly into a PDF file1.

As a printer, it’s not great. But that’s not why I bought it. It scans quickly and that’s where the productivity gains are to be found. I can now do something reasonable with the 100+ pages of notes I’ve received or made during the 2 years of my coaching course.
