Sometimes people use “respect” to mean “treating someone like a person” and sometimes they use “respect” to mean “treating someone like an authority” and sometimes people who are used to being treated like an authority say “if you won’t respect me I won’t respect you” and they mean “if you won’t treat me like an authority I won’t treat you like a person”, and they think they’re being fair but they aren’t, and it’s not okay. @stimmyabby via @mawr@plush.city
The quote above demonstrates how Respect as a word can be used in situations that are the opposite of each other. One shows respect, the other disrespect.
I use Respect in the context of the Legitimate other and Legitimate self which is the first meaning above.
When Authority is introduced to the mix things become complicated. I can respect you in the position you are in, but not the position, and I can respect the position, but not you in it. The second way means I have forgotten to treat you as a Legitimate other.
