A source notes representing something external to my own notes, though I may have created notes about it.
Tagging
All sources are tagged with #source and a secondary tag from Quantum OS Class Tags to indicate the class of item.
Example: Jaku (2020), The Happiest Man on Earth is tagged with both #source and #class/book.
Naming
Sources are named using the following format, taking information from my standard properties.1
- Author surname, first author only
- (publication year)
- Main title up to the first : if there is one
Example: Jaku (2020), The Happiest Man on Earth.
Aliases
The aliases property is set to the main title. It helps with readability.
Example: The Happiest Man on Earth
Storage
All sources are stored in atlas\notes\sources and file automatically by the Auto Note Mover plugin when #source is added. The rule takes priority over all #class filing rules.
Notes are not stored in individual folders by class. Instead, refer to the @class.base file for each class type.
Publishing sources
A source note in its raw form should not be published. This mostly applies to articles, papers and YouTube videos with transcripts scraped using the Obsidian Web Clipper or Obsidian Wallabag plugin.
For articles and papers, a separate #class/source-note can be created and published. YouTube needs the transcript removed.
Other source note types are generally basic information with my own notes so publication is at my discretion.
Refer to Quantum OS Website Publishing for more on how publication is controlled.
Templating sources
I use an Obsidian Templater plugin script to help me format my source entry properties. I run it when I have the basic details loaded. It renames the note to the Naming.
