How many people do you know who hate the sound of their own voice when played back via a recording? Are you one of them? Does it sound wrong? Isn’t it strange how everybody else in the room will say “No, that’s what you sound like”.
The sound of our voice as heard in our head is modified physically for us by the proximity of our mouths to our ears. Yet recording equipment doesn’t lie. Our voice as played back to us is as it sounds to others. Yet we hear it differently from when we speak. This difference in observation is a reminder that the observation (or listening in this case) lies within the Observer.
I use a microcassette recorder when I have a lot of ideas that I want to capture quickly. As I use it more I’m becomming more comfortable with the sound of my voice as I hear it. The difference is nothing to be anxious about. It just is.
