The process of Habit tracking ironically requires developing a tracking Habit. Because reward is part of habit development1 a habit tracker gives positive feedback in the form of streaks.
Habits can be tracked through:
- Journaling
- Checking of a habit, or habits each time it occurs. One common paper-based form is a page for the month with days down one side and a column for each habit.
- Use of an app to either duplicate the previous point, or automatically track. For example, Headspace tracks meditation day streaks, plus total minutes meditated. Audiobookshelf tracks something similar.
Habit tracking can also be used to identify the frequency of bad habits.
