A Basic linguistic act is a linguistic patterns that causes a positive (to me) change in the world when used effectively. Ineffective use will more often than not lead to problems.
Basic linguistic acts occur both verbally and non-verbally.
The Basic linguistic acts are:
- Assertion: An act that states something is factual.
- Declaration: An act, backed by the force of some Authority, that brings about a change in the world.
- Assessment: An act that is a personal opinion or judgement.
- Request: An act that attempts to get another to do something for me.
- Offer: An act where I propose to do something for another.
- Promise: My commitment to doing something for another (whether it comes from a Request made of me or an Offer that I have made and has been accepted).
