The I Want pattern is a remembering pattern that uses a sentence structure what starts with “I Want…” and extends with each linked note.

Intent

The I Want pattern is a Map of Content containing a series of links to notes that begin with “I want…”. For example, instead of remembering which suppliers provide ePub books compatible with your eReader, you need only think “I want to purchase a book for my eReader” and navigate to the page containing your list of suppliers.

The I Want pattern quickens remembering because it:

  • allows you to find something by expressing a sentence; and
  • each level down that you traverse suggests the next level of possibilities.

Applicability

Very useful for quick links to day-to-day activities. For example, “I want to send an email” can be used to launch your favourite email program. Even more detailed could be “I want to send an email to Jane”.

Collaborations

The I Want pattern could form an alternative structure for the Happiness pattern

Consequences

The I Want pattern should not be confused with a to-do list. It is for helping you remember how to do things more than the need to do them.

Implementation

Start with a single note called “I want” and from that expand sentences for the actions you want. Each sentence is partial and splits wherever there is a choice of action.
