As we work/live together some things move to the background because they are shared. You and your wife knew what you meant. Your friend didn't. However the obvious remains in the background. This can be a two edged sword, especially if the background changes for one of you and you fail to make it explicit. I'm curious to know what your wife's friend thought "this Friday" meant. Funny you should mention the "next Friday" example. My wife and a friend of hers had a mix up last month over that very phrase. This mix up caused us to miss (i.e. not turn up for!) this friend's 40th birthday party because my wife said to her friend on the Monday leading up to the party, "I'll see you at the party this Friday," and her friend said, "No, the party's next Friday", which my wife interpreted as "not this Friday but next Friday after that." Dates = clarity, for sure! I believe 100%, "The meaning of your communication is the response you get." Taking responsibility is the only effective choice.
